*must live in Golden Valley, Robbinsdale, Crystal, New Hope, or Plymouth Precinct 16. If you live elsewhere, visit the Caucus Finder to see where you caucus.
You must be at least 16 years old to participate in precinct caucuses. To vote or be elected as a delegate during the caucus, you must be at least 18 years old and eligible to vote in the next election.
Minnesota is one of a handful of states that caucus. That means every two years, each political party organizes its members to start the election process from the grassroots. At Senate District 43’s caucus, you’ll be assigned to a classroom with your precinct – people who live in your neighborhood.
The activities in your classroom will be led by a couple of your neighbors – often your precinct chair and vice chair. You may be asked to help with a role.
Important matters at caucus include:
Electing or re-electing precinct chair and vice chairs.
Proposing and voting on resolutions. If there are things you want to make sure are considered for the DFL platform, you complete a resolution form in advance, take it to your caucus and read it aloud in the classroom. The others present will vote on your resolution. If they vote for it, the resolution will be advanced to the Senate District 43 convention for consideration and then the Congressional District 5 convention and finally the DFL state convention. Resolutions that are similar will be combined.
Hearing from candidates running for office.
Selecting delegates. The group in your classroom will select delegates to go to the Senate District 43 convention (details below). Delegates at that convention will vote on resolutions and, importantly, decide which candidates will be endorsed for Senate District 43A and 43B representatives and Senate District 43 state senator. If all delegate slots get filled, there is also an equal number of alternate delegate slots available. Alternates should still attend the convention in case delegates from your precinct don’t show up.
One or two persons in each classroom also will be selected to be delegates to the Hennepin County Convention.
If you cannot attend your precinct caucus but want to participate and submit a resolution or request to be a delegate, you can complete a Non-Attendee Form and email it to chair@sd43dfl.org. Requests to be a delegate are not guaranteed.
Those elected as Delegates and Alternates at the Feb. 3 Caucuses qualify for attending this convention.
A senate district convention can be an all-day affair, but it can be fun to meet others who are passionate about politics, and meet elected officials and candidates. There can be as many as 300 or so at the Senate District 43 convention.
At the convention you'll:
Hear speeches from candidates seeking to be endorsed for Senate District 43A and 43B representatives and Senate District 43 state senator. Delegates will vote on which candidate to endorse for each race (we will divide into districts 43A and 43B for the representative vote).
Often, you’ll also hear from candidates for higher office who wish to address delegates although no endorsing of them happens at this level.
Vote for delegates to advance to the Congressional District 5* convention and DFL State Convention.
Vote for individuals to serve on convention committees.
Vote for leadership of Senate District 43 – chair, vice chair, and other officers and directors.
Vote for delegates to be members of the DFL State Central Committee.
Vote on which resolutions you want to advance to be considered for inclusion in the DFL platform.

We are anticipating an exciting year just at the local level with our current Senate District 43 Senator retiring, and both Representatives (House District 43A and House District 43B) running for different positions; all three positions will be open for new candidates with no incumbents seeking the DFL Endorsement!
After our Senate District Convention, come back here to see who received our support!
